Savor the Story, Stir the Soul

The Art of Simple Salad Making

here’s something grounding about a salad made with just a few honest ingredients. No fuss. No elaborate garnishes. Just crisp cucumbers, tender lettuces, and whatever greens feel like home that day.
This week, I made a salad that reminded me of presence. I sliced cucumbers thin—paper-like rounds that glistened with dew. Their coolness felt like a reset button. I tore romaine and butter lettuce with my hands, letting the leaves fall like soft confetti into the bowl. Then came the greens: a handful of arugula for bite. Baby spinach added depth. A few sprigs of parsley contributed a whisper of something herbal and kind.
I didn’t drown it in dressing. Just a drizzle of olive oil, a squeeze of lemon, a pinch of salt. That was enough. The flavors spoke for themselves—bright, earthy, clean.
As I ate, I thought about how salads are like communities. Each ingredient brings its own texture, its own story. The cucumber doesn’t try to be the lettuce. The arugula doesn’t apologize for its peppery edge. And yet, together, they create something balanced. Something nourishing.
This bowl reminded me that simplicity can be sacred. That care can be expressed in the way we wash a leaf, slice a vegetable, or choose what to include. It’s not just food—it’s a quiet celebration of what’s fresh, what’s real, and what’s enough.
So today, I’m honoring the humble salad. The one that doesn’t need to impress, but always comforts. The one that reminds me to slow down, savor, and stay rooted.
