Savor the Story, Stir the Soul

Practicing Empathy in Social Media

These days, social media feels like a public square where anyone can say anything, often without context, compassion, or accountability. A single post can spark a hundred opinions. Too often, these opinions come from people who know nothing about the person behind the screen. We’ve normalized speaking on others’ lives. We rarely ask ourselves the most basic question: Do I understand what’s really going on here? That space—between what we see online and what’s actually happening—is sacred. And it’s often ignored.

We need to pause before we comment, repost, or critique. Ask yourself: If this were me, how would I want to be spoken about? It’s not about being overly cautious or silencing expression—it’s about practicing empathy. Some people say they don’t care what others think, but that’s not always true. Words land. They linger. Someone seem unaffected. Yet, careless commentary can ripple through their emotional space in unseen ways.

Personal space doesn’t end where the internet begins. Just because someone shares a moment online doesn’t mean they’ve invited the world into their entire life. There’s a difference between public visibility and emotional availability. We owe it to each other to respect that boundary. Not everything needs a reaction. Sometimes, silence is the most respectful response. Sometimes, reflection is more powerful than reply.

So the next time you feel the urge to say something about someone online, pause and think. Ask yourself: Do I know the full story? Am I speaking from understanding or assumption? Social media is fast, but wisdom is slow. In that space between impulse and intention, we have a choice. We can decide what presence we want to be for others. We can also choose for ourselves.

Before you post, pause. Ask yourself: Am I honoring someone’s humanity, or just reacting to their visibility?
What does personal space mean to you in a digital world—and how do you protect it, for yourself and others?
