What personality trait in people raises a red flag with you?

One trait that always makes me pause is performative kindness. This happens when someone’s niceness feels more like a performance than a representation of who they truly are. It’s the behavior that shows up when someone wants something from you: attention, access, approval. They smile, they flatter, they lean in close—but something in your gut says, this isn’t real. And often, it’s not. People can be incredibly skilled at masking their intentions. This is especially true when they’re trying to get closer for reasons that serve them, not you.
What’s tricky is that the opposite behavior—someone who seems distant or uninterested—can actually be more honest. Not everyone is expressive or eager to connect, and that’s okay. But when someone goes out of their way to act warm and invested, it hurts when they later reveal indifference. It feels manipulative. It’s not just about being fake—it’s about using connection as a tool rather than a gift. That’s why I’ve learned to pay attention not just to what people say. I focus on how consistently they show up when it matters.
This deception isn’t limited to strangers. It can show up in families, friendships, and workplaces. A relative who only calls when they need something. A friend who disappears when life gets hard. A coworker who smiles in meetings but undermines you behind the scenes. These experiences teach you to look beyond surface-level charm and ask: Is this person aligned with their words? Do their actions show care, or convenience?
So I’ve learned to think wisely. Not cynically—but with discernment. I don’t expect perfection, but I do value authenticity. I’d rather someone be blunt and imperfect than polished and insincere. Because in a world where masks are easy to wear, realness is rare—and worth protecting.

Wow! Great read. Truthfully, I don’t trust overly friendly people either especially strangers. Give me rude with some well spoken cuss words anytime.
