Savor the Story, Stir the Soul

What Part of My Routine Do I Always Try to Skip (If I Can)?

Honestly—none. I used to think skipping parts of my routine would give me relief, a break, or even a sense of control. But over time, I’ve learned that skipping often leads to more. More backlog, more mental clutter, more resistance. The things I try to avoid don’t disappear—they wait. And when they wait, they grow heavier. So instead of skipping, I’ve started practicing something softer: doing a little, then continuing later.

This shift didn’t come from discipline—it came from experience. I’d skip a task thinking I was buying myself time, only to find that the undone thing lingered like static in the background. Whether it’s tidying my space, replying to messages, or prepping ingredients for dinner, avoidance doesn’t bring peace. It just delays the inevitable. So now, I try to meet each task with presence, even if it’s just for five minutes. A little effort now often saves me from overwhelm later.

There’s also something quietly empowering about showing up imperfectly. I don’t need to finish everything in one go. I just need to begin. Sometimes I’ll start folding laundry and only get through half. Or I’ll write the intro to a blog post and leave the rest for tomorrow. That’s okay. The act of starting—of choosing not to skip—builds momentum. It reminds me that I’m capable, even when I’m tired or distracted.

This approach has softened my relationship with routine. I no longer see it as a rigid checklist, but as a rhythm I can move through gently. I honor my energy levels, but I also honor the truth: that skipping rarely serves me. Doing a little, then continuing later, is my way of staying in motion without burning out. It’s a practice of presence, not perfection.

So when I ask myself what part of my routine I try to skip, the answer is none. Not because I’m flawless or hyper-productive, but because I’ve learned that skipping isn’t the shortcut I hoped it would be. Instead, I try my best to show up—bit by bit, breath by breath—and trust that small steps still carry me forward.
