Savor the Story, Stir the Soul

“Are you more of a night or morning person?”

People often ask whether I am more of a night person or a morning person. The truth is, I am both. My rhythm doesn’t fit neatly into one category, because life itself doesn’t always move in predictable patterns. Instead, I’ve learned to adapt my energy to the flow of each day.

If I am busy at night—working, writing, or simply caught up in the fullness of life—I allow myself to rest in the morning. This flexibility means I don’t force myself into exhaustion. I honor the need for balance, even if it looks different from the traditional “early bird” or “night owl” labels.

Changing my sleep pattern is not something that works for everyone. Many people thrive on consistency, waking up at the same time each day and following a set routine. For me, however, the ability to shift between night and morning gives me freedom. It allows me to meet life where it is, rather than where I think it should be.

This adaptability has become a quiet strength. Instead of resisting the demands of a late night or an early morning, I adjust. I find ways to make it work for me, whether that means sleeping in after a long evening or rising early to catch the calm of dawn. My pattern is not rigid—it is responsive.

Of course, there are challenges. Sometimes shifting sleep can feel disorienting, and I know it requires mindfulness to maintain health and focus. But I remind myself that my body is not a machine; it is a living rhythm. Listening to it, rather than forcing it, helps me stay grounded.

Being both a night and morning person also reflects how I approach life in general. I don’t believe we must choose one fixed identity. We can be many things at once—creative at midnight, reflective at sunrise, productive in the afternoon. Life is layered, and so are we.

So when I am asked, “Are you more of a night or morning person?” my answer is simple: I am both. I change my sleep pattern depending on what life asks of me, and I find a way to make it work. It may not be the blueprint for everyone, but it is the rhythm that nourishes me.
